“I’ve been to this Verdun gem twice now for brunch so I figured it was about time I leave a review!
This charming chef-owned ‘neighbourhood bistro’ is a great bet! It is a fairly small restaurant situated on a calm intersection. There are a handful of outdoor seats as well as about twenty indoors. This place could easily accommodate a private party or group. With plenty of natural light and open windows on sunny days, even dining indoors feels as liberating as being on a terrace.

I enjoyed brunch on both visits but I will definitely be back to try their evening and tapas menus! I have to say that both times I ordered the ‘Hemingway’ eggs benedict – it was just THAT good. Two poached eggs, home smoked maple salmon accompanied by dill hollandaise…YES. This is one of the best eggs benedict I have ever had. The hollandaise doesn’t drown the dish and it’s perfectly creamy and light at the same time. Just simply perfect!

My second visit I brought along two girlfriends in tow: one had the ‘Horseback’ (Fried egg, seared steak, sautéed mushrooms with a rösti Potato) and the other ordered the ‘Comme vous voulez’ (2 eggs your choice, with sausage, bacon, and roma tomatoes and bake beans). Both were equally delicious. Their brunch menu is short and sweet which is really great for indecisive folk like me. The menu has something for just about everyone.

On my first visit, I got to chat with Chefs Jose Rodriguez and Anabela Gonçalves. Both were gracious, warm, and welcoming. Just chatting with them alone was enough to bring me back! Anabela is responsible for their famous desserts. I was so stuffed after brunch that I couldn’t squeeze in a seductive looking piece of chocolate cake (although the temptation was there…) I hear that people actually order whole cakes for takeaway for those of you interested!

I would definitely recommend this adorable bistro. Whether you live in the area or not, it’s worth the trek! The area is undergoing changes so it makes for a nice weekend neighbourhood exploration day.

“In the fast food nation where many of us reside, it comes as a wonderful surprise to find a breakfast location that includes fresh herbs and homemade jam with its dishes.
How many locations use chestnut flour for their mouthwatering crepes? How often do the owners grow their own herbs and pick their berries?
Eating in this small intimate atmosphere while your breakfast is prepared for you, can make you feel as though you were eating at a friend’s house.
Can’t wait to return!!”

“Piquillo make it worth the detour to Verdun: Lost in the ocean of pizza and hot-dog joints that is Verdun, it was an absolute delight to discovery Piquillo for brunch this morning! I had the Egg & Steak breakfast. I always thought of “steak for breakfast” as a super greasy and much to heavy way to start your day, but with the assurance from our waiter of getting a perfectly cooked steak and “human-sized” portions, I gave it a shot and I was not disappointed! With the awesome Spanish and Portuguese influences the owners brought to this dish, it made this typically American breakfast something extraordinary! They even make their own jam from berries they pick themselves in the wild! This place has easily shot up to my top 3 breakfast places in the city! I can’t wait to go try their dinner menu!! “
